Occupy Wall Street (OWS) which propelled an international Occupy movement started at Zuccotti Park to protest against economic inequality. The movement remained significant in New York City's Wall Street financial district from September to mid-November, 2011.
Social and economic inequality, greed, corruption and the undue influence of corporations on government—particularly from the financial services sector were targets of the movement, whose slogan was "We are the 99%". Consensus-based decisions were made in general assemblies that stressed on redressing through direct action over the petitioning to authorities. Many celebrities and progressive activists from a wide-ranging left-leaning political spectrum regularly attended OWS.
Subsequent to their forced removal from Zuccotti Park, the protesters focused (with relative success) on occupying banks, corporate headquarters, board meetings, foreclosed homes, and college and university campuses.
